His name is Bernardo, but they call him José because of a mix-up when he his birth was registered; and they call him “uncle” because, once, his nieces came to visit and that is how they addressed him.
The lodge’s first owner christened him Tio José.
He arrived more than thirty years ago — when the lodge was still just an pipedream — to open the trail towards the lagoon where it would later operate.
“Before, there were only monkeys and brush, ” he tells me.
The first task was to build the staff house. Then they went on to put up a first little cabin, an office, and the storeroom. It was hard work. It took a year to complete, hauling all the materials on their backs.
