Wanapaay Maqui Numi Foundation (Kich-wa for Helping hands in The Forest) is a non-profit humanitarian organization dedicated to bettering the lives of impoverished Amazon communities, especially the children.WPN was formed by La Selva Jungle Lodge as an independent entity duly constituted with the government of Ecuador, however La Selva is the principal benefactor to WPN. But others are beginning to follow and La Selva has donated an administrative employee who spends half her time seeking out benefactors. Our principal objective is improving the quality of life of the Napo communities with social, medical and educational projects and projects aimed at encouraging conservation among indigenous people. We achieve our goals primarily through donations. People who donate give the tools and opportunities necessary for success by providing benefits and supporting different programs for each family in the communities - primarily in the areas of education and health. HOW WE HELP WMN Foundation currently serves 100 families in the Amazon area.Specifically in the community of Pilche, our closest neighbors. Poverty is severe and some of our projects include: - Health: access to a doctor, dentist, vaccines, medical brigades and medicines
- Education: uniforms and school supplies, personal hygiene workshops.
- Nutrition: malnutrition screenings, feeding programs, supplements and educational programs
- Community: clean-water initiatives, sanitary latrines and micro-enterprise programs and grants, household items, income-generation programs, educational opportunities and housing and home-repair assistance
- Work: Workshops for the members of the community in different areas in order to train the people for working in the future.
RECENT DONATIONS 1. The Brigade of Smiles With the help of our principal benefactor La Selva Jungle Lodge and more than 60 volunteers from Cecilia Rivadeneira Foundation, a Brigade “La Caravana de la Alegría”(The Caravan of Hapiness” took place in the Pilche Community, our nearest indigenous group, where the volunteers painted the school and social areas, repaired the desks of the school, built a library, gave medical assistance to children and adults, repaired and cleaned the latrine facilities, equipped the school and finally, much to the delight of the children built a well-equipped play ground. A television crew from Quito filmed the event for apublic affairs show and interviewed our CEO at length. Regretably, Ecuadorians know less about the plight of their own Amazonian peoples and forests than foreigners. (Of the some fifty thousand and more guests La Selva has had the honor to host fewer than a dozen have been Ecuadorian.)
The help of our benefactors are really important. The Brigade of Smiles had the support of ROSE who donated to the community food, clothes and books for the children.
2.The Dramatic Adventure Workshop The Dramatic Adventure Theatre is a project which provides the opportunity for artists to perform around the world, to explore the unknown and the familiar, and to become intimately involved with distant communities in order to build a platform where ideas, talent, and original works can be shared. La Selva Jungle Lodge, WMN Foundation and The Dramatic Adventure Theatre developed various activities in order to achieve the following objectives: Objectives:
- To experience life in the Amazon by working, and getting involved with the Kichwa community (El Pilche) ; getting to know the local reality listening to their unique stories.
- To share artistic skills, knowledge and ideas.
- To document their narratives in order to empower their voices and transform those voices into a play which can be shared with the rest of the world.
- To become a helping hand improving their quality of life.
The Result of their interchange with the community of Pilche will be a play to be performed in New York City in the near future perhaps lending a larger voice to the virtually voiceless kich-wa of the Napo River. 3. Donation from La Salle College
A local college of Quito-Ecuador, decided to give a donation to the children of the Pilche community. They donated the following:
- Medicines
- Toys
- Diapers
- Rice, Sugar and purified water
The donation was handled by La Selva Jungle Lodge, who went to the Pilche community and made a ceremony for the children so that they would understand the nature of donations and the need for self-empowerment. ... click here to go to our contact form & a 5% Award."
